Zum Moghulhof offers the cuisine of the Mughals, a Turkish ruling family from Central Asia who were deeply influenced by Persian culture, responsible for much of the Indian food known worldwide. This cuisine developed from the 16th century onwards, during the Mughal’s reign, which was cantered in Delhi. They introduced new foods, spices and preparation techniques, such as cooking with the tandoor oven, which they brought from their own culture and also learned from the Persians. Monumental buildings like the Taj Mahal and Mughal miniatures, which portrayed life at the Indian imperial court, remind us of their time. Mughal cuisine is renowned for its delicious meat dishes and rice polaus, which often contain mild and creamy sauces made with yoghurt, cream, fruit and nut butter. The secret to the unique flavours of Indian cuisine is the composition of spices, which do not include the curry powder commonly known in Europe. Over time, local herbs and spices also made their way into Mughal cuisine, eventually becoming the national cuisine of northern India, known as Mughlai cuisine.

The Abraham family, originally from Sri Lanka, established Austria’s first Sri Lankan restaurant called Colombo Hoppers in 1989. Jayantha, who had worked as a sailor, decided to stay in Austria after visiting his brother in Burgenland. After gaining significant experience in the catering industry, he founded the restaurant. In 1991, he met his wife Sudarshini in Sri Lanka, who specialized in gastronomy in the field of dietary cuisine as well as vegetable and fruit carving. Since 2016, she has been responsible for the kitchen. The couple’s sons, Darith and Savin, share their parents’ passion for gastronomy and both have their own areas of responsibility in the restaurant after various internships in the tourism industry. The family also participates in various outdoor events and the restaurant hosts cultural events with top-class artists combining their performances with Sri Lankan cuisine. The family is dedicated to presenting the authentic “treasures” of Sri Lanka to their guests in Austria and to bringing the tropical island’s typical flair to Europe.
